Loving Well During the Holidays

‘Tis the season to be jolly – Fa, la, la, la, la…

Let’s face it, there’s a lot of pressure on the hurting during the holidays. What do you do when you don’t feel jolly?! The whole season bustles with busy, overflows with festivities, and clangs with chipper melodies about it being the most wonderful time of the year. What if it just…isn’t?

I love the concept of Advent. Historically it was a season of waiting in the darkness…waiting for Light to come. When Christmas came, there was a deeper grasp of the celebration. Jesus, the Light, had come into the world…hope in the midst of darkness. What would it look like to temper some of┬áthe frantic, materialistic bustle with real, meaningful hope this holiday season?

Seasons of loss, grief, depression, and just overwhelming circumstances can leave those we love desperate to get through to January in one piece. So how can we love them well?

I happened across this website today with some very practical ideas of how to be supportive of those in difficult places during the holidays. I know from experience that even the smallest of gestures can encourage in big ways, so never underestimate the power of caring.
